After some testing, I’ve found my current favorite pack design for the hipbelt and frame. The hipbelt is full wrap and completely removable. The aluminum frame is a single stay, positioned in the center, accompanied by an interior pocket to hold a foam pad for extra comfort and an interior zip pocket for organization.

I’ll be offering this soon as a standard option on the website. A single custom colored Xpac version of this pack will be available for sale tomorrow.

Most comfortable combination I’ve ever used. It’s the same as my giant and colorful alpine style pack used on recent trips.

Back to where it all began: 2017. I just brought puppy Lucy (AKA Red Paw) with me to college during my sophomore year. We had a lot of great adventures together outside around Tallahassee, FL. Next thing I know, I have a crazy idea to pick up sewing as a new hobby and design my own UL backpack. I started with a cheapo Brother machine (pic 2) and a kitchen table in our college apartment and voila, my first bag was born. I spent a lot of time tinkering, as I’m one to do. Getting more serious about the hobby and gaining more space in our rented house junior year, I decided to get a few more machines (pic 3) and take over part of our living room for sewing and our disgustingly hot and humid garage for cutting. Next thing I know, I’m getting out on a lot of trips with my new handmade gear. Including climbing my first 14’er (Quandary Peak) during a trip visiting my family in Boulder. I fell in love with the mountains there and promptly moved after quitting a job I took right after college. Spent the next 3 years there. In a better workshop refining designs and skills, playing in the mountains and making YouTube videos in the backyard.

It’s great to reminisce about the past and the story because it reminds me how bright the future will be for Red Paw.

Every cottage company has a story, but this one is ours.

What a trip. I’ve been wanting to do this loop for years. Relentless stunning views the entire time. Unfortunately very crowded, even on weekdays. Pretty difficult hike. Especially for Lucy. She was loopy and wrapped in a towel on the last morning.

If you do this loop, PLEASE practice LNT when doing your “business” in the woods. There was an unbelievable amount of #2 and TP not buried on this trail.

The Problem: Sun protection in the lightest and most breathable form

The Solution: a 0.6 oz visor made from 1 oz Monolite (Burnt Orange Topo) for the crown and 1.6 oz HyperD PU4000 (Foliage) for the brim.

If you’ve seen any of my trip photos you know I almost always rock a visor. Breathability is unmatched. Now it’s even better.

Jackass Pass with the boys.

We did a tough 3 day / 2 night trip to Cirque of the Towers, Jackass Pass and Texas Pass in Wyoming and the views were rewarding!

Be warned, the mosquitoes were so bad they could carry you away!

Finally got to properly test my alpine style FR40 with cinch top on this trip. Got a ton of comments from other hikers, mostly because of how colorful it is.

There were so many lakes. Naturally, Lucy (AKA Red Paw) got to swim the whole trip.

Who doesn’t love a matching set of bags? These took me a while to build but I’m really stoked on the results.

Ultra 400 Back and Bottom Panels + Ultra 200 sides and front. 1.9 oz ripstop cinch collars (love this). Dyneema Stretch mesh pockets and integrated stake slot on the front pocket. Daisy chains on all 4 seams and horizontally along the scooped front + 4 compression straps each. Carbon fiber frame. Interesting shoulder strap bottle pockets that use new hardware and CSM Polyester in place of grommets.

18”, 19” and 21” torso lengths, with the 21” coming in at 25.3 oz.
