This was far from an attack on civilians. It was an attack on the police. The rioters, responding to the death of a friend, decided that they could exact a harsh revenge, out of proportion to the violence they had seen that day. And when that didn’t work, they decided to attack what was, in the main, an innocent community.

She was referring to the Canfield Green riots of 10 July, though in the context of the riots as a whole, it’s more accurate to say that she was describing a vicious assault on a police station which exploded into a wider attack on the black community of South Central LA.

After refusing to face the music, the rioters had been bailed and were now threatening to attack again. This time they did. “The riot scene was suddenly transformed into a battleground between the police and the rioters.” Lynton describes the scene:

Police and CRI [Community Relations Initiative] officers were forced to use extraordinary force to disperse the crowds and clear the streets, in many cases by shooting. Fourteen officers, six bystanders and two rioters died, among them two little boys.
