The Front Range 40 Liter Backpack is ideal for thru-hikers and weekend warriors alike who require a medium volume ultralight frameless backpack. Each pack is custom made here in Tarpon Springs, FL, by me.
The 40 Liter volume of the backpack is a measurement of the interior space only. The stretch pockets on the straps, exterior and bottom, as well as the large side pockets, add considerable extra expandable volume.
Black HDPE Gridstop fabric will be used for all shoulder straps and side pockets unless another fabric is requested.

I should start this review by saying that I am not the typical ultralight pack owner. Over a significant number of decades, I have spent a considerable amount of my time outdoors – on the water, on the trail, and on the snow – in various places and have spent a considerable amount of time travelling. I reached a point where I wanted one pack that would serve most of the uses I could anticipate for it. Something strong, something light and something versatile.

I ordered a custom Front Range 40 in Ultra with dual adjust hip belt, joey pouch inside the rear mesh pocket, and y-strap. I’ve put almost 150 miles on the bag so far and it has exceeded all expectations. Matt’s build quality is exceptional with both sewn and taped seams that showcase his skill as a craftsman and attention to detail in the finish. The Ultra fabric is light and extremely durable with practically no sign of wear after plenty of sliding and squeezing through the deserts. The (frameless) pack rides comfortably even with full food/water carries. Water bottle pockets on the shoulder straps has been one of my favorite upgrades! Matt is responsive and communicative throughout the process. I appreciated his willingness to talk through some of the customizations I was considering to suit my needs, being equal parts accommodating and challenging my ideas with his own thoughts and expertise. As someone who has owned packs from other cottage makers, I will tell you that the price/quality/lead-time of Red Paw Packs puts them at the top of the heap. I’m already working up an order for my next bag and would not hesitate to recommend Matt and his products to anyone looking for a new pack.

I ordered a black and orange front range 40l with most of the add ons. The pack is really well thought out. the Y strap an on for example is easily switchable between using it as a Y or just a straight band over the top. Build quality all around is really fantastic. Matt was quick to respond to anything questions I had as well. Although its certainly not everything I really love the look as well, a very stylish pack. At first I wasen’t going to for a fanny pack but I came around on the idea. Hoping to see if I can use Molle clips to clip the front pocket on as a removable organizer I can hike with through the day and bring into the tent at night. I’m getting off topic here now though. Overall I’m really happy with the end product and service. Thanks Matt!

Redpaw Packs are the best!!! Comfortable packs with a killer design. My favorite feature are the cushiony full featured shoulder straps with running vest style. Matt does a great job with any custom features I request. I’ll be back for another pack in the future!

Blown away by the craftsmanship! This pack is fantastic. I had a bunch of custom requests and options that I needed for a Search & Rescue pack, and I wanted some specific colors. Matt went back and forth until we got exactly – and I mean exactly what I wanted. I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect mission pack for years, AND THIS IS IT!!! I will definitely buy more packs in the future, but it won’t be to replace this one, because it’s so sturdy.
